When a baby tooth has too much decay for a simple filling — or when it has been treated with pulp therapy — a cap is the best way to protect what remains of the tooth until it naturally falls out.

The most common type for children is a stainless steel crown — silver-coloured, extremely durable, and placed in a single visit. Tooth-coloured options are also available for front teeth.

What Happens During the Visit

Assessment and X-ray

Dr. Sayli checks how much of the tooth is healthy and whether a cap is the right treatment. An X-ray is taken if needed to check the root.

Numbing the tooth

Local anaesthesia is given so the child feels no pain. We wait until the area is fully numb.

Preparing the tooth

The edges of the tooth are smoothed very slightly so the cap fits perfectly over it.

Choosing the right cap size

Stainless steel caps come in different sizes. Dr. Sayli selects the one that fits your child's tooth precisely.

Cementing the cap

The cap is filled with dental cement and pressed onto the tooth. The cement sets firmly. The cap is now in place and will stay until the tooth naturally falls out.

No — a properly fitted stainless steel cap is extremely secure. It is cemented firmly and designed to last until the tooth naturally falls out. Occasionally a cap placed elsewhere may feel loose, but at Tulip Kids Dental we check the fit carefully.

On back teeth (molars), the cap is barely visible. For front teeth, we have tooth-coloured options. Dr. Sayli will discuss the best option for your child's specific tooth.

When decay is very large or the tooth has had pulp therapy, a filling is not strong enough to protect the remaining tooth structure. A cap distributes the biting pressure evenly and prevents the tooth from cracking.

A stainless steel cap lasts until the baby tooth naturally falls out — typically until age 10–12 for back teeth. You do not need to replace it.
